Mosaic is an art that needs many processing stages, because it consist of a collage (it’s a whole, composition, overlapping, interlocking) of many materials (stone, ceramic, wood). These materials are in turn of many types, such as marble extracted from different quarries are different in colour and hardness. Each tile/fragment/shape is created by hand according to the drawing (or project) you want to realize.

When people look at me while I’m doing mosaic, they often say “how patient you are!” And every time I would like to answer them “NO! I am an emotional and passionate person”.

In order to realize an artistic project (of any kind), you need imagination. To make it concrete, you need the manual ability to translate the idea into a definite shape. To cut the different types of materials, you need precision and experience. Patience is only one of the many requirements needed to make mosaic. Patience understood as perseverance.

Like any craft creation, a mosaic requires the ability to find the right balance between speed and slowness.

To do with energy, without wasting time, the work of “roughing” (select the materials and cut them in the desired shape and size). Then slow down, take care of detail, walk away to look at the whole and start again. One piece after another, cut, smooth, sand. Patience is needed to learn the right rhythm. Patience is essential in order not to get caught up in the rush to see the finished work.

Mosaic is a slow art technique.

It’s called slow art not because you sit around waiting for a spontaneous birth! It’s called slow art because, to create a work of art, it takes so much time, so much care and so much professionalism. In the age of the Internet it can happen to forget that virtual reality is not enough. Among human beings, it,s the body that meets the needs that an intangible relantionship cannot satisfy. Applied arts, craft techniques remind us that beyond a remote emotion, there is also the need to caress surfaces.

It is called slow art because it must (it should) be looked at, evaluated and (if you like it) appreciated, only slowly and carefully.

Il mosaico è un’arte che ha bisogno di tante fasi di lavorazione perché è un collage (insieme, composizione, sovrapposizione, incastro) di tanti materiali (pietra, ceramica, legno). Questi materiali sono a loro volta di tanti tipi come ad esempio i marmi provenienti da diverse cave.

Ogni tessera/frammento/sagoma è creato a mano in base al disegno (o al progetto) che si vuole realizzare.

Spesso chi mi guarda fare mosaico mi dice -quanto sei paziente!- Ed io ogni volta vorrei rispondere “NO! Sono un’emotiva e una passionale”.

Per realizzare un progetto artistico (di qualsiasi tipo) serve immaginazione. Per renderlo concreto serve la capacitá manuale di tradurre l’idea in una forma precisa. Per tagliare i diversi materiali serve precisione ed esperienza. La pazienza è solo uno tra i tanti requisiti necessari per fare mosaico. Ma la pazienza intesa come perseveranza.

Un mosaico ,come qualsiasi creazione artigianale, richiede la capacitá di trovare il giusto equilibrio tra velocità e lentezza. Fare con energia, senza perdere tempo, il lavoro di “sgrossatura” (selezionare i materiali e tagliarli della forma e della dimensione desiderata). Poi rallentare, curare il dettaglio, allontanarsi per guardare l’insieme e ricominciare. Un pezzo dopo l’altro, tagliare, smussare, carteggiare. La pazienza serve per imparare il giusto ritmo ed è indispensabile per non farsi prendere dalla fretta di vedere il lavoro finito.

Il mosaico è una tecnica SLOW ART non perché ci si siede tranquilli ad aspettare un parto spontaneo! ma perché per far nascere un‘opera serve tanto tempo, tanta cura, tanta professionalità. Nell’era di Internet può succedere di dimenticare che non può bastare la realtà virtuale! Tra persone è il corpo a soddisfare le necessità che un rapporto intangibile non può appagare. Le arti applicate, le tecniche artigianali ci ricordano che dopo gli occhi, dopo l’emozione a distanza c’è anche bisogno di accarezzare le superfici.

Si chiama slow art perché, solo lentamente e con attenzione deve (dovrebbe) essere guardata, valutata e (se piace) apprezzata.
